Ten minutes, most of it trees
The run over from Chingford crosses the forest and goes past Connaught Water, which is a pleasant drive at eight in the morning and a slow one on a Sunday in July when half of east London has parked on the verges. We treat Woodford Green as part of the same round as north Chingford. Morning slots here are easy. An afternoon one depends on where we started and what the traffic on the forest roads is doing.
Different council, different rules
You are in Redbridge, so the Waltham Forest permit scheme that governs the Chingford streets has nothing to do with your road. Most of it is unrestricted anyway. We park on the drive or directly outside, though it is worth checking if you are close to a station, where the commuter bays begin and the restrictions get fussier.
Big houses, big carpets
Plenty of the housing on this side is detached or large semi-detached with the forest at the end of the garden, and that combination produces the dirtiest carpet in our week: the hall runner in a house where the back gate opens onto the trees. Mud and leaf mould come through the same door for eight months of the year. The dog brings the rest. Patio doors make it worse, because there is no path and no doormat between the lawn and the carpet, just a threshold strip.
Carpets are priced by the room. A bedroom is £36, a living room £43 and a through lounge £61. That last one comes up more here than anywhere else we work, because the wall between the two reception rooms usually went years ago.
The rest of what we do here
A steady run of weekly and fortnightly houses at £23 per cleaner per hour, and rather more range cookers than the E4 average, since the kitchens on this side tend to be bigger and a 90cm range at £143 is common. Move-out work is thinner in IG8 than it is in Walthamstow. Fewer of these houses are rented. What we do get instead is a team deep clean before a house goes on the market, which is a different job from a check-out clean and priced by the hour rather than by bedroom count.
